Built for the Big Stuff

Boldly invested in Maine for 40 years…and growing

Maine Community Foundation started in 1983 with a $10 donation.

Decades later, our history and connections to all 16 counties in Maine is rich; MaineCF and our donor partners have provided more than $665 million in grants to organizations and scholarships to individuals all over the state.

The connections between MaineCF, donors, non-profits and community leaders help to achieve a shared mission: bringing people and resources together to build a better Maine.

We are dedicated to doing what it takes to ensure that Maine is a vibrant and equitable place where people and communities thrive.

To achieve this, we conducted an assessment and analysis of Maine that revealed several areas that present challenges to this vision. More than 1,500 residents, partners and stakeholders provided us with data that tell us that among other areas, climate, housing and economic opportunity are places where we can make the biggest difference. And serving to close the gaps in equity across all three areas of focus will overlap and run throughout.

Climate was approved by the MaineCF Board in September 2023 and wour work is in its initial phase; read about our strategies here. Housing and economic opportunity are more recent additions and continue to be explored with our partners. However, given the clear data, we know that these areas will be critical to Maine’s future.

We can’t do this alone – just as the colorful elements of our updated logo meld together different components to create a rich picture that reflects our state, we hope those of you who care deeply about Maine will come together to make a real and lasting difference for all Mainers.

MaineCF will seek to build a better Maine by continuing to partner with local and statewide experts, donors and organizations – through local leadership, grants, scholarships, and focused initiative areas. Please see each area for more information.
