Cats in need of homes are now curled up in the laps of their new humans thanks to a program in Dexter.

Dexter Age Friendly Community created the program Furever Friends, which provides both homes for felines and furry companions for older people.

The program, supported by a grant from MaineCF’s Animal Welfare grant program to the Town of Dexter, provides new cat owners with basic pet-care expenses and pet deposits if required by lease agreements.

Cats from Spirits Place, a MaineCF Animal Welfare grantee in St. Albans that cares for feral and abandoned cats, are vetted and paired with older people, according to the Bangor Daily News. Should the owner need to relocate to a residential facility, Spirits Place will find a different home for the adopted cat. So far, seven cats have found new homes.

MaineCF’s Animal Welfare grant program this year awarded 25 grants totaling $342,884.

Other grantees include The Franklin County Animal Shelter in Farmington, which was awarded a grant for its spay and neuter voucher programs, and Friends of Feral Felines in Portland, which received funding for its trap, neuter and placement program.
