Celebrate Black History Month through live performance, song, and discussion with these February events hosted by MaineCF grantees.

Legally Racist Speaker Series

4-6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 9, virtual

Alpha Legal Foundation’s “Legally Racist” speaker series this month features Jody David Armour, author and Roy P. Crocker Professor of Law at the University of Southern California. Armour studies the intersection of race and legal decision making, as well as torts and tort-reform movements. He is a widely published scholar lecturer and a Soros Justice Senior Fellow with Open Society Institute’s Center on Crime, Communities and Culture. Armour graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Harvard University and JD with honors from the University of California-Berkeley.

Songs of the Living: A Community Sing with Toshi Reagon

Musician, producer, and creator Toshi Reagon leads this community sing-along with songs from Octavia Butler’s “Parable of the Sower” opera.

Reagon is Bowdoin College’s 2022-2023 Joseph McKeen Visiting Fellow whose “Parable Path” framework is based on the opera. Her fellowship focuses on student engagement and community-led activities surrounding the belief systems and social issues that impact healthy living in Maine and the world.
